Shared Drain? Who's Responsible?
It's never a good time to come across a drainage problem, but it's even worse at this time of year. Add to that the confusion of who is responsible for getting the problem fixed and you're facing a potential nightmare.
We'll look at just who is responsible for which drain and when you'll need to arrange for drain repairs or maintenance. Of course, if you're unsure about the process and what to do next, just ask the experts here at JLH Drains!
If it's your property
If you are the owner of your business property or home, then the drainage system within the boundaries of your property is your responsibility. Therefore any drainage issues or general maintenance solutions are down to you to arrange.
However, if you have noticed a drainage problem or potential issue outside of your property, then this likely to be down to the lateral drains that serve the main sewer system. If this is the case, the sewers will be publicly owned and run by local water companies and we would recommend that you contact them immediately.
If you live in a shared building
If you live in a blocked of flats or a shared apartment building and discover a drainage issue, the best thing to do first is to contact your landlord. They will then either be able to get in touch with a drainage company, like ourselves, or if it's a lateral or sewer issue, the local water company, such as Southern Water.
Whether it's a drain that you're directly responsible for, or it's a shared or lateral one, it is highly imperative that you make sure that any problems are dealt with quickly by experienced professionals.
